Traditional Home Transformed into a Modern Family Haven
When our clients relocated from Houston to Memphis to start a new chapter, they found the perfect house in a great neighborhood for their daughters. However, the home’s early 2000s traditional style didn’t match their vision. Together, we transformed it into a stylish and functional sanctuary that reflects their family’s personality and needs.
The Design Process
This project was all about impactful cosmetic updates that made a big difference while working within the home’s existing structure. Fresh paint, new countertops, updated tile, and carefully selected lighting brought a fresh perspective to every corner. By keeping most of the cabinetry—except in the powder bathroom—we reallocated the budget to focus on other key updates, like refinishing the floors.
Refining the Floors
One of the home’s standout features was its Australian cypress flooring, which had developed an orange hue over time due to its original oil-based polyurethane finish. We worked closely with Classic Hardwood Floors to sand, stain, and seal every square foot. The guys were beyond generous and probably sampled about 12 stain combinations so we could find the perfect one! By using Minwax Weathered Oak with a water-based sealer, we minimized the floor's red and orange undertones, achieving a refreshed, natural appearance that perfectly complements the home’s updated design.
A Bold Welcome in the Entryway
The entryway makes an unforgettable first impression with bold wallpaper above a fluted chair rail, accented by rich green details. What initially felt like a daring choice has become a striking focal point that sets the tone for the home’s neutral palette with carefully placed pops of color.
A Kitchen for Connection
As the heart of the home, the kitchen underwent a timeless transformation. We modernized the space with new countertops, painted cabinetry, and updated hardware—all while honoring the home’s traditional architecture. A dated, bulky vent hood was replaced with a sleek transitional design, and sconces were added to give the space warmth and personality. With its refreshed wood floors and thoughtful updates, the kitchen now serves as a central hub for baking and connecting with family.
Master Bathroom Transformation
The master bathroom saw the most dramatic transformation. The original design felt closed off and dark, with minimal glass and sheetrock walls that separated the shower from the tub area. We opened up the space by replacing the shower with glass walls on three sides and added a window above the tub to let in natural light. These changes created an airy, serene retreat that feels as luxurious as it is functional. As with the rest of the house the cabinetry was in great shape, but painting it this rich deep teal brought the design up to date and fitting with the clients style seamlessly.
Fun and Functional Bathrooms
Each bathroom in the home was updated with its own distinct personality and purpose, ensuring a balance between functionality and beauty. These spaces reflect the needs of the family while seamlessly integrating into the home’s cohesive aesthetic:
The Girls’ Bathroom: A playful space featuring checkered shower tiles, mermaid-inspired fish-scale floors, and a painted vanity with updated hardware.
The Powder Bathroom: Reimagined for guests with a fluted vanity, Taj Mahal quartzite, abstract silk wallpaper, and a seamless wallpapered vent fan for uninterrupted elegance.
The Guest Bathroom: Subtle yet special, with new tiles, painted cabinetry, and wallpaper above the vanity to create a welcoming, polished look.
This project showcases how thoughtful updates and creative solutions can transform a house into a home. From playful touches to modern functionality, every detail reflects the family’s unique vision. We're honored to have helped them create a space that truly feels like their own.
